SCA Great Geln Paddlesfest
This is something that I have been involved with for a while and was privileged to be asked to be part of the safety advisor team for the trail. I will be running workshops over the two days as well as speaking in the evening. Look forward to seeing you there.

Many will have sen that we have a third unit which up until now has just ben boat storage. Well the master plan is to put new offices into unit 7 including a meeting room. Unit 7 and 8 will become one unit and and unit 9 stays with all the hire/demo/instructional store.

Not long back from India white water kayaking.

A team of 7 of us took on the Tsarap and another 6 joined us on the Zanskar. These rivers are up in North West India in the Ladhak region.

Absolutley stunning trip!! The rivers are in the most stunning of canyons with huge walls and big volume water ~ boils and huge waves a plenty!!

This gave me next no paddling photos!

I have been pretty hectic recently but have been enjoying he sunshine right around the country. I have been running all sorst of courses and have had the shop set up at various events around the country - namely the Scottish Sea Kayak Symposium.

We have also taken on another unit at the shop to make more room for the store and the increasing amount of shop stock.

I am still busy and at the moment we are on the road evry few weeks to the manufacturers to keep up with the demand. I continue to work with the colleges and Glenmore Lodge and will start getting busy again with the BCU.

At the start of December I was agian running a UKCC Level 2 training course at Glenmore Lodge. It was a bit of a struggle to find water due a huge cold snap.

November saw the English Canoe Symposium take place. As one of the organisers for the Scottish event and as one of the countries top canoe coaches I was down there coaching.

Continuing the work I have being doing with the BCU, I have been heavily involved with the development of the Advanced White Water Safety & Rescue course. I look forward to this one being out there for all.

Another one out the door. This course will be great fro those that prefer to tour and is accessible for those that use all manner of craft. Look back soon as I work on the new 4 & 5 star touring leadership awards.

As I am part of Team Pyranha I was down recently to the Treweyn to coach at their Festival. It was great to see so many folk around along with the launch of their new boats.

Well it's been a busy time of late.

I have had a few visits to manufacturers around the country. These have included White Water Consultancy / Pyranha / Hayling / Perception / Palm / Dagger / Avoncraft.

I have also had time coaching & assessing in Wales.

I was at the Canolfan Tryweryn working on the new Advanced White Water Safety & Rescue course for the BCU. This was followed by assessing Level 5.

With the work I have been doing on the new Foundation Safety & Rescue Module for the BCU, I finished this of and started the retraining for SCA providers.

I have just finished running a modular UKCC level 1 course for Forth CC. This was the first one run like this in the country and has given the club 9 new coaches to help out with the new influx of paddlers they are getting. Well done team of 2008!!

Rescue Symposium

UK River Rescue SYMPOSIUM - March 8th – 9th Llangollen

Hosted by Canoe Control International Ltd & Supported by Paddles Magazine and Pesda Press.

Cost £55 non-residential per person for both days.

The river rescue symposium will be chaired by Franco Ferrero of Pesda Press, the author of the benchmark guide to white water rescue techniques - White Water Safety & Rescue.

Held over the weekend of the 8th - 9th March in Llangollen there will be indoor workshops, river workshops, a rescue forum and evening presentations. These will be presented by some of today’s most respected practitioners and trainers working in the field of river rescue together with input from well known white water paddlers.

We have been at some of the manufacturers open days for dealers. This has allowed us to see what they are planning for the new season. There is quite a bit of new kit arriving and I will upload more in the coming weeks.

The SCA held it's annual canoe show which gave us the opportunity to move on old stock as well show some the new kit that is available.

Busy time working

I have been pretty busy over the last while.

Some pics of the variety of things that I have been up to.

Lots of open canoe work and especially getting folks up to 2 star so they can work and assess the new 2 star award.

Time has been spent travelling and delivering equipment around the country. That means time getting stuck behind trucks and crossing bridges.

The next little while sees more UKCC work and meetings around this. Another new book in the shop will be great for those into building their own canoes.

This is the Sea 3 are also widely available.

We are know able to provide Grey Owl Sea Paddles on demo. They also have a variable split shaft that allows you to vary feather left and right by any degree that you desire.

We have been selling the Old Town Pack for a while know and are delighted that we have another one in stock. These are great little solo canoes.

Fiona Whitehead presentation

Fiona Whitehead

Fiona is best known as the first woman to successfully circumnavigate Britain and Ireland single - handedly in a kayak. However her enthusiasm has led her to try out many branches of the sport of canoeing and taken her to Israel, Wales, Scotland, Spain, Ireland, Australia, Alaska, and North America. Fiona is a popular speaker and tonight she will share her love for canoeing, her life in the outdoors, and her experiences on many expeditions - in particular her circumnavigation of the British Isles.
Presentation will take place at the shop from 7.30pm, cost £5. For more information please contact the shop.

Well at last Fort William has it's own paddlesport shop. This past weekend saw the opening.

If you are in the area then pop in for a chat, water levels, access & egress points. The shop will be open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday's at present.
Our full range of trips and courses will be available in Fort William as well.

Well things are moving on now and it's a week until the opening.

The shop is operational at the moment with a selection of stock and some boats with more moving up during the week until we have the full compliment there for next weekend.

We have Gordon Brown coming along between 11am and 1pm to sign copies of his new book.

Allan Ellard will be about to chat and let us know about his kayaking adventures. (Remember he has a presentation at our Stirling shop on Friday 16th Feb)

From this weekend with the official opening on 17th Feb Nevis Canoes will be supplying canoes / kayaks / SOT's / sea kayaks with all relevant accessories. We will also be providing hire / guiding and courses.

I managed to get a day out on Sunday 14th Jan due to a child protection trainers course being cancelled.

So the plan was hatched to meet in Perth and have a look at some burns. In the end 15 of us went to the Invervar Burn, a tributary of the Lyon.

Disinfectant to stop Fish Disease

A deadly fish parasite that goes by the latin name of Gyrodactylus salaris, more easisly referred to as Gs, has wiped out valuable fish stocks in a number of European rivers and if ever brought into the UK could have a similar impact here. Whilst the import of live fish for the farming industry poses the greatest risk of importing Gs into this country, those travelling to and from the UK for water based recreation are being asked to be vigilant and to take precautions as they travel back home.

To help with the precautions we have sorced some heavy duty disinfectant to help with this "Virkon" and can be bought in individual sacthets to help clean your kit on return.

Great Sadness!

During the Christmas break it was a great shock to learn of the death of Hew Evans from White Water Consultancy.

Hew was one of the countries great characters, with many a tale to tell. I like many will miss the crack with Hew.
